Rental Cars Won't Need Transponders to Travel Through Sunpass Lanes

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Sept. 27 -- Many rental car customers traveling on Florida's toll roads and bridges are now able to utilize 'SunPass Only' lanes to pay their tolls, even without a SunPass transponder, thanks to a pair of innovative programs announced by Turnpike officials this week.

Rental car customers in Central Florida also can use the EPass lanes on toll roads operated by the Orlando- Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA), and will soon be able to use the LeeWay toll lanes in Lee County.

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise has entered into contractual agreements with American Traffic Solutions and Rent A Toll, Ltd. to administer a program which utilizes license plate information to identify rental vehicles and electronically collect the toll.

American Traffic Solutions is currently offering its PlatePass(R) cashless toll payment service to rental car customers using vehicles rented from Avis, Budget, and Hertz.

Spain votes Sunday in national election

Days before the vote, most polls showed Rajoy's Popular Party with a solid lead and Socialist insiders say even they did not expect to win.

But then came the horrific March 11 Madrid train bombings that killed 191 people and injured 1,800, which the outgoing government of conservative Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar initially blamed on the Basque separatist group ETA.

Hours after the bombings, police found an audio tape of Quranic verses in a van outside a station through which the targeted trains had passed.

Two days later—and just a day before the vote—authorities found a video made by the perpetrators claiming they did it in allegiance to al-Qaida and in retaliation for Spain's support of the U.S.-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Despite the mounting evidence, Aznar and Rajoy stuck to their hypothesis that ETA was behind the bombing.

Local elections to be decided Saturday

For many Louisiana voters taking part in today's presidential primary, this might be Sublime Saturday compared to the hoopla of Super Tuesday in other states just four days ago. In some parts of St. Tammany Parish, though, there is more at stake.

All five seats on the Mandeville City Council are up for grabs, with two incumbents seeking re-election and two others hoping to remain on the job with new assignments.

Voters in Madisonville will consider 10 candidates for the five seats on the Town Council.

And in the 6th Ward north of Pearl River, the ballot includes a special election to fill a vacancy for justice of the peace.

There are 64,713 registered Republicans and 46,406 registered Democrats in St. Tammany Parish, according to Registrar of Voters M.

Relax, Leafs fans. There will be playoff hockey at the Air Canada Centre next spring.

That's the prediction from EA Sports, anyway, after playing the entire upcoming season with the company's NHL '08 video game. The results:

The Leafs will finish seventh in the Eastern Conference, win a seven-game first-round series with Ottawa but fall at the next hurdle to the Rangers in six.

The worst team in the league will be the Washington Capitals, last in the East with 67 points.

Martin St. Louis of Tampa Bay will win the scoring title, and Sidney Crosby will repeat as Hart Trophy winner for the league MVP.

The New York Rangers and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks will win their respective conferences, then run aground in the playoffs, the Rangers ousted by Pittsburgh in the East final and the Ducks bounced by Edmonton in the West semifinal.

This is a very significant time for us," he said. "This is when you start sending the right messages, not just to people in the organization, but to the support staff, personnel staff and most importantly to the players. You're telling everybody, 'This is what we're doing.' The tone and the culture are established here. You can't be flippant. The decisions can't be emotionally driven."

No. Let's leave that to DeAngelo Hall.

It's unfortunate when an athlete's talent comes with so little forethought or leadership. Hall, despite having a pretty good season amid the Falcons' collapse last year, flashed his shortcomings often last season. He said the wrong things at the wrong time instead of doing what a veteran should do to hold a fractured team together. When others talked about ways to turn things around, Hall asked for a new contract.

The ugly truth in Afghanistan

Military operations should aim at speedy victory and not prolonged campaigns.

In Afghanistan, if the west hasn't won by now, it's facing prolonged, ignominious, and inevitable defeat.

The Search For The Elusive Captive Audience Means No More ...

It's actually interesting at times but you're really not there very long. I was crushed the other day while I filled up to hear that Eric Clapton was at Madison Square Garden at the same time we were already going to be in California! If we hadn't had other firm plans they might have driven a sale. And it's not very intrusive as I find that pumping gas isn't much of a "personal" moment where such things might be seen as an intrusion. YMMV ....

Ever read The Space Merchants by Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth? A number of Heinlein's novels depicted intrusive advertising in passing, not as a main theme. Many SF writers since have included intrusive advertising to some degree in their stories.

Memoirs of Meth Addiction from a Father and a Son

Howdy Pop, God, I miss you guys so much. I can't wait to see you all. Only one more day!!! Woo-hoo."

Nic is emailing from college on the evening before he arrives home for summer vacation. Jasper and Daisy, our eight- and five-year- olds, are sitting at the kitchen table cutting, pasting, and coloring notes and welcome-home banners for his homecoming. They have not seen their big brother in six months.

In the morning, when it's time to leave for the airport, I go outside to round them up. Daisy, wet and muddy, is perched on a branch high up in a maple tree. Jasper stands below her. "You give me that back or else!" he warns.

"No," she responds. "It's mine." There is bold defiance in her eyes, but then, when he starts to climb up the tree, she throws down the Gandalf doll he's after.

Oracle - how to make friends and influence people

He said Oracle was willing to support BEA Systems, rather than saying something like he usually does like, 'why would anyone go somewhere else when Oracle can provide the software stack?'"

He added: "He's beginning to see he can't own the world, or he'll alienate customers. He's finding it's better to own 70 per cent of a real large pie, than all of a smaller one."

Oracle's "hot pluggable" middleware software, used to underpin its ebusiness applications suite, is designed around standards, which means it can be swapped out with open source and competing products. That technical design is also meant to attract partners, such as application builders catering to small businesses.

Having a rich network of third-party products based on Oracle's software helps fill the "white spaces" - aka gaps - in Oracle's own portfolio.
