OIA receives go-ahead to charge new rental-car tax

It's about to get more expensive to rent a car at Orlando International Airport.

Board members of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, the agency that runs OIA, voted Wednesday to adopt a $2.50-a-day tax on car rentals. The "customer facility charge," which would be capped at five days, could add as much as $12.50 to a customer's bill.

Backers said the tax will raise money for $102.6 million worth of rental-car upgrades planned at the airport during the next few years, including additional parking spaces, fueling stations and car-wash bays.

Local Gas Station Charging Over $4 Per Gallon Near OIA

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There was a break for the holidays, but gas prices are ready to rise again. One local gas station, though, is already charging customers much more than others.

RAW INTERVIEW: Manager Defends $4.49 Per Gallon

Customers at the independent gas station near the Orlando International Airport are paying $4.49 a gallon. Some of the customers don't know the price they're paying until it's too late.

There are no large signs showing the prices at the station. Most customers are tourists returning rental cars before catching flights at Orlando International Airport. Not all believe it's an honorable way to conduct business.

"It's not fair. It's definitely price gouging during the holiday season," said tourist Les Lazarus.

Even at $4.49 a gallon for regular, most of the pumps were busy at Suncoast Energys on Friday morning.

Cis' blog roundup - Friday

I couldn't help but notice that there was quite a discussion about how things should be run here. Over the course of 2 1/2-plus years of running this blog, I should get some credit for understanding how to run this blog while making it fun. I've tried drafting rules from time to time. But most of those attempts have gone by the way side. The ones Blogmeister Ken posted earlier this week are about as dead-on and simple as it gets:

- No personal attacks or inflammatory posts.
- No copyright violations.
- No libel.
And, if it isn't obvious...
- No porn.

I'd probably put an asterisk behind "or inflammatory posts" because some of you guys are so poisoned toward others that you believe anything they post is "inflammatory." Also, some of you believe that any dissing of your favorite political party or ideology is a personal attack.

Nurses form nonprofit to prevent deaths from sudden cardiac arrest

As a registered nurse, Patricia Mathison of East Orleans has seen patients die from sudden cardiac arrest because a lifesaving device was not available.

Now Mathison, fellow nurse Judi Franklin of North Harwich and Annie Dugan, a retired nurse who lives in Marstons Mills, have formed Connecting Hearts to ensure that every victim of sudden cardiac arrest has an equal chance for survival.

The mission of the nonprofit organization is to raise money to expand the presence of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) throughout the Cape.

"If there are more AEDs available countless more lives will be saved," Mathison says.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the U.S., striking more than 350,000 people annually, with a survival rate of only about 5 percent, according to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association.

DOTC exec counters Arroyo on NBN 'flaws'

An official of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) on Monday said there are "no intrinsic flaws" in the national broadband network (NBN) deal amid allegations that the project was overpriced and full of irregularities.

Undersecretary Thompson Lantion contradicted words from President Arroyo who said over the weekend that she was told of flaws in the NBN project only on the eve of its signing last year.

On behalf of DOTC Secretary Leandro Mendoza, Lantion, who is also chairman of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), said that the department made all the necessary steps in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the project.

Lantion, who was with Mendoza's office when the project was being negotiated, said that the NBN deal went through studies by the Department of Justice, Government Procurement Board and an international firm which helped in examining its comparative pricing.

Interview: Never Back Down's Amber Heard

They both have beautiful character arcs and they both carry each other to different places in the script than where they started.

You say that you escaped that world. How did you escape? Were you about to become that girl, like Baja?
I think Ive always had a certain amount of skepticism of this whole shut up and smile theory. I havent ever swallowed that pill so easily, although I tried. I think every girl has at that point because the pressure that society puts on you is intense. Im not talking about to be thin like models in magazines. Thats such an easy thing that people always relate to it. Its much deeper than that. Its that moment in class when you know the answer and youre afraid to raise your hand. I used to be very interested in the history of womens rights in this country and in other countries.

Only a fool would use a credit card to invest

Unlike a mutual fund, UIT share prices in the secondary market may be priced above or below the net asset value of the trust's actual holdings. When you buy shares of UITs, you typically pay a sales fee, or load, of around 4 or 5 percent. But you should note that many mutual funds carry no sales loads at all.

My dumbest investment: Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. This means don't invest in things you don't know much about. I made a real estate investment in a marginal property and lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. It makes every mistake I ever made in the stock market appear trivial. Blind faith, hunches, and the assumption that there is a solution to every problem are what lead people into financial disasters.

How to save big bucks at the last minute

Ah, last-minute travel. To hear the online travel sites describe it, it's all about theater weekends in New York, romantic getaways in Napa and beach time in the Bahamas.

Yeah, right. If you're like most people, the only time you travel at the last minute is when work or family matters demand it. Either way, you just know you're going to pay through the nose for it.

At least that's what I thought until last week when a family emergency required us to travel from Seattle to San Diego on short notice. As I happily discovered, you can save big bucks on short notice — if you know where to look.
