Rental Cars Won't Need Transponders to Travel Through Sunpass Lanes

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Sept. 27 -- Many rental car customers traveling on Florida's toll roads and bridges are now able to utilize 'SunPass Only' lanes to pay their tolls, even without a SunPass transponder, thanks to a pair of innovative programs announced by Turnpike officials this week.

Rental car customers in Central Florida also can use the EPass lanes on toll roads operated by the Orlando- Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA), and will soon be able to use the LeeWay toll lanes in Lee County.

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise has entered into contractual agreements with American Traffic Solutions and Rent A Toll, Ltd. to administer a program which utilizes license plate information to identify rental vehicles and electronically collect the toll.

American Traffic Solutions is currently offering its PlatePass(R) cashless toll payment service to rental car customers using vehicles rented from Avis, Budget, and Hertz.

Local Gas Station Charging Over $4 Per Gallon Near OIA

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There was a break for the holidays, but gas prices are ready to rise again. One local gas station, though, is already charging customers much more than others.

RAW INTERVIEW: Manager Defends $4.49 Per Gallon

Customers at the independent gas station near the Orlando International Airport are paying $4.49 a gallon. Some of the customers don't know the price they're paying until it's too late.

There are no large signs showing the prices at the station. Most customers are tourists returning rental cars before catching flights at Orlando International Airport. Not all believe it's an honorable way to conduct business.

"It's not fair. It's definitely price gouging during the holiday season," said tourist Les Lazarus.

Even at $4.49 a gallon for regular, most of the pumps were busy at Suncoast Energys on Friday morning.

treats all countries fairly, equitably and everyone pays their fair ...

1) I agree with your take.

2) From what I have read, I would concur that MOST scientists believe there is some effect, but the degree of which is the main point of contention and subject to many more years of study.

3) I am on your side. I want my home in the next 2 -5 years to be equipped with a 7000Wph solar generation with grid tie-in, and I want to be charging my electric car in my garage.

4) My main position is that AGW science is not settled. I am against alarmism, against the idea that only 1st world nations should participate, and against the idea of paying more tax to partake in what should be a capital budget item. I believe in prioritization of current revenues vs: picking the pocket of the taxpayer. Posted 14/12/07 at 3:14 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

The Debates: A Preview of the Campaign Ahead

We really do need a better schedule of presidential primaries, one that tests the candidates over time, not in just a series of uncoordinated jump starts that could settle both parties' nominations almost a year before their nominating conventions.

A staggered system of regional primaries would be a big improvement; so would a system that lets smaller states go first, followed by the larger prizes later. With a schedule of primaries like this year's, there may be time for the candidates to strategize, but not to think. The current hodgepodge of primaries prompts people to pick a candidate to root for (Americans love sporting events) but it leaves people little time to ponder their choice.

There's no fixing the system in time for this election year, but at least this past week's debates, after so many face-offs that had too many candidates and not enough substance, did tell voters what each party was about at this fluid moment of American history.

He then says ratings are not that important. "This is, first and foremost, a battle for journalistic excellence." ... P.S.: Marketwatch's fawning inerviewer, Jon Friedman, explains Klein's ratings non-triumph, after almost two years on the job:

CNN most likely won't make any dramatic strides until the U.S. acts to have a Democrat living in the White House.

How will that work? Doesn't being in opposition tend to help ideological media institutions like FOX? [Via TVNewswer, Romenesko] ... Down the Enemies List: Meanwhile, BMW designer Chris Bangle, the Jon Klein of the auto industry, tells a Britain's Independent:

What makes the car alive is for it to be responsive, animate. ... There has to be more of a message than 'I'm beautiful, I'm powerful, I'm sexy'.

Scots do not want to end the Union, merely modify it

IT'S time. Time for a change. Time to move on. This is the last column from this writer which will appear in this position in this paper. A new and extremely challenging role on the business desk awaits.Sadly, it means no time for the glorious self-indulgence of expressing a weekly opinion on the affairs of the nation. The world of politics is a continuously fascinating one. There is always something new. Political parties take power and always, in the end, lose it. Politicians' fortunes ebb and flow. Plots and conspiracies abound. Policies evolve and change.Over time, the decisions made by our elected representatives really do "make a difference", a phrase politicians use frequently, to the lives of the poor, long-suffering voters whose interests they are supposed to represent. Politics matters. And having spent many years at both Westminster and Holyrood as a reporter – and worked, albeit for only a year, on the "dark side" as a special adviser to former First Minister Henry McLeish – politics had become like a drug.
