Rental Cars Won't Need Transponders to Travel Through Sunpass Lanes

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Sept. 27 -- Many rental car customers traveling on Florida's toll roads and bridges are now able to utilize 'SunPass Only' lanes to pay their tolls, even without a SunPass transponder, thanks to a pair of innovative programs announced by Turnpike officials this week.

Rental car customers in Central Florida also can use the EPass lanes on toll roads operated by the Orlando- Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA), and will soon be able to use the LeeWay toll lanes in Lee County.

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise has entered into contractual agreements with American Traffic Solutions and Rent A Toll, Ltd. to administer a program which utilizes license plate information to identify rental vehicles and electronically collect the toll.

American Traffic Solutions is currently offering its PlatePass(R) cashless toll payment service to rental car customers using vehicles rented from Avis, Budget, and Hertz.

Opinion: It's clear BCS still bunch of ... well, you get it

Let me be the first to tell you that any day now, the veil of confusion will be lifted and everyone will see the real story line of this crazy, mixed up college football season. Right now, you're all being blinded by the feel-good sense of how much fun it is to see the football establishment spun on its head.

You think it's so cute that this is the year Notre Dame and Nebraska are homecoming patsies. You snicker at the idea that Kansas and UConn — noted basketball powers — have ditched their notorious football lightweight status at the same time. Who doesn't love how every week the Top 10 looks like a revolving door, and that all sorts of unlikely names have worked their way into the Bowl Championship Series spotlight and so many familiar ones have worked themselves right out?

Blinded by the light, we love embracing the idea that football historians will ultimately call this college football's most radical season in generations.

No more ‘that ain’t me, man!’

Anderson County Sheriff's Department deputies have new crime-fighting tools — laptop computers for patrol cars.

Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Mark Lucas informed The Oak Ridger on Wednesday that patrol cars are being equipped with laptop computers which have wireless broadband technology, giving officers immediate access to records and jail information.

The primary goal of the project is to allow deputies the ability to fill out reports in the field. With some 550 reports filed each month, officers are spending a significant amount of time in the office doing paperwork, Lucas said.

Do toes know your story?

If the palms tell a story about our future, then the toes reveal something about where we've been. That's according to Chicagoan Gabrielle Loomis, a life coach who has added toe reading to her toolbox.

"Your toes are repositories for the emotional journey you're on, from birth to now," says Loomis, a certified toe reader in Chicago.

Incredibly cool car rentals

America might have invented “car culture," but there's a strong case to be made for lusting after European luxury. And while possession may seem the obvious goal, the duration of that possession is always relative. So ask yourself which is better: owning a Maserati you can never drive? Or driving a Maserati you could never own?

More and more car aficionados are exercising the latter option, through rental agencies that specialize in luxury auto and high-end driving clubs. Across the country and abroad, fleets of the newest, sweetest rides—Ferraris, Aston Martins, Audis, Lamborghinis—are available for all, at a price—without the hassles of garaging, maintenance and repair. Exotic car rentals are often the first step, followed by car clubs. In these automotive versions of the members-only country club, well-heeled car enthusiasts pony up initial membership payment, and then annual dues—in exchange for the keys to a cadre of top-end vehicles.

Recall bid a fraud, mayor's lawyer says

The residency matter is just the latest development in the text-message scandal that has consumed the mayor's administration. Prosecutors are considering criminal charges against Kilpatrick and former chief of staff Christine Beatty based on whether they lied during a whistle-blower trial filed by two former Detroit police officers.

Johnson said he wanted others to file the petition because of his City Council bid. But he said most were fearful of retribution if they took on the mayor. "I couldn't get anyone to do it. They were too scared," he said.

To put a recall before voters, Johnson would have to get nearly 57,000 valid signatures of registered voters in the city. He said he has more than 300 volunteers ready to start collecting them.

Willy Northpole and the Phoenix hip-hop scene explode

The George S. May Company is going to join Magedson's corporate advocacy program. (Kushnir declined to say how much he's paying.) Basically, Kushnir will pay Magedson to reveal the complainants against the company, and then Kushnir can do what he would have wanted to do all along — address them.

Good news for Magedson. But not such good news for the people who had anonymously blasted George S. May. After all, Magedson will be giving them up. And if they're current employees, they're probably going to be in trouble with a capital T.

Kushnir says he won't sue anybody — he's learned his lesson — but if it's a disgruntled secretary who called the founder a pedophile, it's hard to imagine things will end happily for her.

Kushnir says he's happy with how things ended. But the incident does raise some ethical questions.
