Waiting Tuesday for a plane bound for Dallas/Fort Worth, Jamey Johnson, 29, sat in the terminal of the Alexandria International Airport reading the newspaper. Tuesday was Johnson's first day on the job with Thompson Home Health in Alexandria, and he was flying to the corporate office for training. .

At the same time he allowed himself everything; he always had new girlfriends," Nino told Amnesty International. She reported that her husband did not give her any money. "He bought food for us but he forgot that we also needed clothes. My parents helped me with that," she said. She told Amnesty International that her husband beat her frequently and when he lost his job he started to drink heavily and the beatings intensified. When Nino was pregnant with her second child her husband reportedly hit her in the stomach. He said he did not want the child and would move to live with his lover unless the child was a boy. However, she said that when she gave birth to a boy, the beatings continued.

But the bid is being met with resistance in the state Legislature, where some lawmakers say it's too late in this year's session to push through such a proposal. .
Poll: Most on Maui can tolerate TVRs
KAHULUI — At least up until Jan. 1, about one-third of Mauians had had some direct contact with transient vacation rentals. Most, though not all, said they were getting along, according to a survey by SMS Research commissioned by the Realtors Association of Maui. The results generally mirrored an SMS survey in 2002, which was commissioned by the county. Since then, much has changed, including an alleged explosion of transient rentals. Except for a handful with permits, unlicensed operations were supposed to shut down last month. The recent SMS survey, taken in December and January, started out by asking whether the respondent lived in a neighborhood that had TVR operations. Half the respondents on the west side said “yes," as did three in 10 in Kihei. One in four who lived on Molokai or Lanai said they had a TVR neighbor.
