Going places: San Diego more than just animal attractions

San Diego has the famous San Diego Zoo, Shamu pirouetting at SeaWorld, and the Wild Animal Park, where giraffes and rhinos roam freely. But the city has something other Orlando-style fun zones don't: natural beauty. Add a come-hither climate and distinct neighborhoods to the city's seaside good looks and you've got reason to get packing.

The trendy Gaslamp Quarter, once the stomping ground of gunslinger Wyatt Earp, is now the 16-block sanitized epicenter of the city. Its meticulously restored Victorian buildings house an array of lively restaurants and shops. A rental car can land you at San Diego's surfer beaches and picture-postcard seascapes including the views from atop the emerald cliffs in tony La Jolla. Shift gears in dusty Old Town State Park, the authentic birthplace of California, where Mexican heritage is celebrated with margaritas, hand-patted tortillas and historical re-enactments without too much schmaltz.

Local Gas Station Charging Over $4 Per Gallon Near OIA

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There was a break for the holidays, but gas prices are ready to rise again. One local gas station, though, is already charging customers much more than others.

RAW INTERVIEW: Manager Defends $4.49 Per Gallon

Customers at the independent gas station near the Orlando International Airport are paying $4.49 a gallon. Some of the customers don't know the price they're paying until it's too late.

There are no large signs showing the prices at the station. Most customers are tourists returning rental cars before catching flights at Orlando International Airport. Not all believe it's an honorable way to conduct business.

"It's not fair. It's definitely price gouging during the holiday season," said tourist Les Lazarus.

Even at $4.49 a gallon for regular, most of the pumps were busy at Suncoast Energys on Friday morning.

Rental Cars Won't Need Transponders to Travel Through Sunpass Lanes

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Sept. 27 -- Many rental car customers traveling on Florida's toll roads and bridges are now able to utilize 'SunPass Only' lanes to pay their tolls, even without a SunPass transponder, thanks to a pair of innovative programs announced by Turnpike officials this week.

Rental car customers in Central Florida also can use the EPass lanes on toll roads operated by the Orlando- Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA), and will soon be able to use the LeeWay toll lanes in Lee County.

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise has entered into contractual agreements with American Traffic Solutions and Rent A Toll, Ltd. to administer a program which utilizes license plate information to identify rental vehicles and electronically collect the toll.

American Traffic Solutions is currently offering its PlatePass(R) cashless toll payment service to rental car customers using vehicles rented from Avis, Budget, and Hertz.

OIA receives go-ahead to charge new rental-car tax

It's about to get more expensive to rent a car at Orlando International Airport.

Board members of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, the agency that runs OIA, voted Wednesday to adopt a $2.50-a-day tax on car rentals. The "customer facility charge," which would be capped at five days, could add as much as $12.50 to a customer's bill.

Backers said the tax will raise money for $102.6 million worth of rental-car upgrades planned at the airport during the next few years, including additional parking spaces, fueling stations and car-wash bays.

Off the beaten path in Beijing: where the rock stars, artists and ...

If you're planning a trip to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics, but you fear you may tire of Olympic fever and flag-waving throngs, don't despair. Beijing has rich offerings when it comes to art, music, groovy boutiques and quiet temples.

Most of the capital city's guided tours are about awe and acquisition. Visitors are stunned into submission by the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and Tiananmen Square, then quickly shuttled to buying sprees at the Pearl Market or Silk Street.

The humbling grandeur of those imperial masterpieces is offset by the giddy empowerment of buying quality knockoffs of brands like Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Tiffany for a fraction of the usual cost. Few can resist the temptation. It is usually followed by a belly-busting Peking duck feast.

But this kind of Beijing experience is not for everybody, and there are a wealth of unique, low-cost alternatives.

The nation's mood

Many on the left would simply rather have Obama than more Clinton scandals, more Clinton mess, and another president who governs right of center while offering left of center platitudes.

I don't think you've linked to the wonderful Atlantic Monthly article about Obama. So I've linked it at my name. I'm sure you reject the notion that he's worth considering, but I'd be happy with President Obama, even if I disagree with his politics. It wouldn't represent a trip back to the Clintons, and would go a long way towards dispelling the notion that American politics amounts to a revolving monarchy.

ARK. BLOG: 1) As I've said before, I like Obama. Though he's lately not been too sure-footed and that's important. And I had to laugh listening to him put on his black accent in Chicago the other day.
