Local Gas Station Charging Over $4 Per Gallon Near OIA

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There was a break for the holidays, but gas prices are ready to rise again. One local gas station, though, is already charging customers much more than others.

RAW INTERVIEW: Manager Defends $4.49 Per Gallon

Customers at the independent gas station near the Orlando International Airport are paying $4.49 a gallon. Some of the customers don't know the price they're paying until it's too late.

There are no large signs showing the prices at the station. Most customers are tourists returning rental cars before catching flights at Orlando International Airport. Not all believe it's an honorable way to conduct business.

"It's not fair. It's definitely price gouging during the holiday season," said tourist Les Lazarus.

Even at $4.49 a gallon for regular, most of the pumps were busy at Suncoast Energys on Friday morning.

Dollar Thrifty Hits a Big Pothole

The problems of the car rental business are deepening. On Feb. 4, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group (DTG) shares plunged 35% after the firm nearly cutting in half its expectations for 2007 profits.

Dollar Thrifty's news jolted the industry, raising worries that U.S. consumers are cutting back on their travel spending. Dollar Thrifty's larger rivals, Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ) and Avis Budget Group (CAR), at one point on Feb. 4 had fallen as much as 7% and almost 14% respectively.

Fears of a recession add to the difficulties for car rental firms, already battling it out in a brutal business. The car rental industry's problems are similar to those of the airline industry, which has been notoriously tough on investors. Both are highly competitive industries with high fixed costs, so they find it tough to squeeze out profits on a regular basis.

Online ads will overtake TV

Online advertising in UK is expected to overtake the television market by the end of the decade, according to the Internet Advertising Bureau. Guy Phillipson, the IAB’s chief executive, said that by the end of this year the internet advertising market will be worth £2 billion (E2.89bn) and is expected to overtake national press advertising.

The industry body said that internet marketing grew by more than 40 per cent in the first half of 2006 to £917 million, compared with the same period a year ago. Online now accounts for more than 10 per cent of advertising spend, up from 7.2 per cent a year ago.

Tobacco Advertising

After a Government bill failed to become law before the 2001 general election, Ministers adopted an identically-drafted private member's bill, first introduced by Liberal Democrat Peer Lord Clement-Jones.Television advertising of tobacco products was banned in the UK in 1965 under the Television Act 1964, which was reinforced by an EU directive in the 1980s. Other advertising, such as press and billboard, was governed by a self-regulatory agreement with the Government. This covered the manner of advertising and the positioning of promotional sites.Controversies Contentious issues are the degree to which tobacco advertising encourages people to take up smoking and to what extent individuals of different ages should be exposed to promotional messages.Opponents of a ban argue that tobacco advertising does not grow the market for tobacco products, seeking only to influence the brand decisions of existing smokers and informed adults.

House price carcinoma

Then pass a law in New South Wales that says no dwelling with a backyard can be rented for more than five hundred dollars a week.

This would force rents down everywhere, and house prices down. If the current rule of thumb prevails, no Sydney mansion in Point Piper would cost more than $500,000 after a while, and your average hovel in Coogee with a backyard, probably, no more than $120,000. Wouldn't that be nice.

(2) That we put the GST up to 11 per cent and with the extra money establish a State Bank that lends at five per cent, and only five per cent, unvaryingly, to first home buyers, couples married for three years, or couples with at least one child, or, yes, same-sex couples who have been together for three years, up to $200,000 and no more.

This would force other banks into similar offers or out of business.

GM posts record loss, offers new round of buyouts

The company is reporting a loss of almost $39 billion last year, the largest annual loss ever for an American automaker. It largely was due to a third-quarter charge related to unused tax credits.

The company also announced it's offering a new round of buyouts to 74,000 hourly workers in the U.S.

Retirement-eligible workers will get between $45,000 and $62,500 as an incentive to retire, depending on their skill level. Younger workers can get up to $140,000 if they leave and cut all ties with the company.

GM says it expects the majority of workers to leave by July 1st.

Environmental groups critical of proposed power plant

So far, more than 700 people and organizations have sent comments, said Adam Myrick, media relations specialist for the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Santee Cooper wants to build two 600-megawatt generators near the banks of the Little Pee Dee River. The Pee Dee Energy Campus would be capable of powering 600,000 homes. Santee Cooper says if it doesn't build the plant, it will run short of power by 2013, possibly triggering brownouts and blackouts on peak energy days.

Santee Cooper's plan has drawn strong support from the state's manufacturing base, with representatives from factories and smelters saying their plants might become less viable without inexpensive and dependable power.

The plant also has generated vigorous opposition from conservation and citizens' groups, with doctors in Florence protesting recently outside DHEC's offices.

WENDY: DID SHE LIE?

The list confirms a £950 donation had been made from Green, states his full Jersey address for the "purpose" of Electoral Commission registration, but questions its legality by stating: "Permissible?"

Days later, Alexander's campaign told the Electoral Commission that the donation had been made from a company called Combined Property Services, a claim that proved to be false.

The MSP who organised the donation, Charlie Gordon, resigned last week.

In another extraordinary development, the Sunday Herald can reveal an apparent attempt by the Alexander campaign to mislead the commission by "switching" the name of another individual listed as a donor.

The list names Moir Lockhead, the chief executive of transport giant First Group, in the "donor" section with a contribution of £995.
